Rome, Italy was
the trip of a lifetime. There is so much history, so much to see, so much
to experience that a lifetime does not even seem enough to absorb it all.
Yet, one week almost felt like it was too much: your five senses quickly get
overwhelmed by the richness of the place and you find yourself wondering why
you didn't come for only 3 days to make sure you could really appreciate it
all to its just value. I must say there are already a few things I find myself
missing. For example, I really liked the smell of fresh oranges growing on
Palatine Hill and the rooftop view from our hotel located in front of one
of the four Major Basilicas. I also miss the Roman cats, so proud and friendly.
On the other hand, I do not miss the non-stop honking from 9 to 9 (although
the week-ends are relatively peaceful), the menus that vary from pizza to
pasta, including a bit of Parma ham here and there, the smell of cigarettes
(does everybody smoke in Rome?) and the anti-pedestrian set of mind. Trying
to cross a street in Rome is indeed a perilous activity. I'm glad we
wet to Rome though. It is a city worth visiting and I would most definitely
go back if the opportunity arises...but whatever made them call it the Eternal
City? With zebra crossing like that, all these carbs, smoking, and stress
from driving, one really has to rethink that nickname a little better...Ciao
Roma!

View from our hotel's rooftop on St. Mary Major Basilica
We had breakfast on that rooftop every morning and could enjoy a view on
the Basilica, the Vatican and some snow-caped mountains
