January 2007. The phone call that I had been dreading
for years had finally come to be: Ken was to deploy to Iraq and there was
nothing I could do about it. Within ten days, I went from total bliss to
confusion, to anger, to desperation and finally acceptance. I never knew
what to do with the 6 months notice they gave us. Was it a blessing? A "go
ahead, have fun while you can" or more of a "go ahead and stress about it"?
And what was I supposed to do with the 6 months after those unbearing ones
leading to Ken's departure? I had just moved to Denmark where there was no
Air Base for support, had very little friends, no job, and was definitely
far away from my family and friends. Ken was the center of my universe. I
was undeniably going to be lost after he'd leave. Turns out I did feel lost,
especially at the beginning and right midway towards the end but did rather
well during the last few months. I found strength in myself that I never
knew I had and decided to move on as if Ken was still around but simply had
gone to do some training. I found a job, made friends and got the entire
support of every single soul in the Embassy. I even took a trip to Quebec
to see old friends and family and had the first Mackay function at our house
to celebrate Quebec National Day. Life was moving on whether I wanted
it or not. I could choose to sit back and look at it or choose to participate
in it. In the end, I thought living it would be more fun and would make it
go by faster since I'd be busy, so I jumped right in. My most sincere thank
you to all my strong supporters, whether they are colleagues, family members,
old friends or new friends I made while Ken was away. Thank you for listening,
e-mailing , calling and taking me out! :) I'll never forget your support.
Below is a sample of pictures snapped while Ken was
away.

in temporary housing. She made me so happy!
