The Holidays Were the Bomb

New Year's Eve 2006 / Veille du jour de l'an 2006

The occasional ambulance will indicate that somebody got hit by "shrapnel" or a whole tube of fireworks.

One of the numerous places to be for New Year's Eve if you are not afraid of being shot or pursued by fireworks is Sortedams S¢ or any other artificial lakes of Copenhagen. People are granted access to professional fireworks and all through the night, people light whatever they have wherever they feel like it: streets, lakes, parks and such. Find a good spot, preferably  far from rocket launchers (a beer bottle with a rocket firework MEANT to go over water), and don't go anywhere. It's very cahotic, very noisy and smelly. When you get back under the street lights, you'll feel like a war is ongoing. There is smoke everywhere, pops, everyone is running and there are no cars on the streets. The occasional ambulance will indicate that somebody got hit by "shrapnel" or a whole tube of fireworks. No dead last year, but some fingers lost in the counter-attack.  A crazy experience you'll remember all your life. Bigger than Fourth of July too, fireworks are launched from all around the city so beware.
